From Service to Social: Celebrating Alex’s Journey with Net Socials
Share
Every now and then, something happens that just makes us pause and go, wow, this is exactly why Net Socials exists.
One of our amazing Community Leads, Alex Barrett, has been featured by BFBS Forces News sharing his journey from the British Army into civilian life. And reading his story, we could not feel prouder to have him in this community.
Alex joined the Army as a teenager, travelled the world, worked his way up, became a Physical Training Instructor and built the kind of leadership, resilience and people skills you just cannot fake. But like a lot of veterans, stepping out of that world meant losing more than just a job. It meant losing structure, routine, that deep sense of belonging and being part of a team.
That is where community matters. Finding Net Socials helped Alex reconnect with something he loved long before the military, tennis, but also with something just as important. People. Stepping into a Community Lead role gave him back that feeling of being an instructor, supporting others, guiding beginners, and creating a space where people feel comfortable showing up exactly as they are.
And honestly, that is the heart of this whole thing. Yes, we run tennis sessions, but what we are really building is a platform. A place where people can grow, rebuild confidence, expand their world a bit, and find their feet again, whether they have moved cities, changed careers, left the military, or just needed something new in their life.
Seeing Alex use the skills he developed in service to now lift others up on court is just magic to us. It is leadership in a different setting. Same care, same energy, just a different uniform.
Stories like his remind us that Net Socials is about more than sport. It is about connection, purpose, and creating spaces where people can step forward into the next version of themselves, with a few good humans around them.

If you have ever thought about getting more involved, leading sessions, or being part of something that genuinely makes a difference in people’s lives, we would love to chat.
